Semi-Quantitative Detection of Harmful Alum Additives in Food Products
Alum (Aluminum-based additive) is toxic to the human body and is prohibited in many food categories, including edible bird’s nest.  Long-term accumulation of aluminum can damage brain cells, leading to early-onset dementia, cognitive decline, and nervous system damage.  In food safety regulations—especially in China—alum is banned from bird’s nest products, and nitrites are strictly limited to no more than 30 mg/kg.

The FSTest Alum Detection Kit provides a fast, reliable, and semi-quantitative method to detect alum residues in food, supporting quality control, customs inspections, and safety compliance in processed foods, noodles, snacks, and bird’s nests.

How It Works – Simple Test Workflow
Sample Prep:

  • Weigh 0.5g of ground food sample
  • Add extracting agent + distilled water to the 50mL tube
  • Shake & sonicate (or stand for 20 min)

Reaction Setup:

  • Take 1mL of supernatant → Add 1.5mL Detection A + 1.5mL Detection B
  • Let it react for 5 minutes

Interpretation:

  • Compare final color to standard colorimetric chart
  • If diluted, multiply result by dilution factor
