Recombinant Human Leptin (LEP)
Homolog of Murine Obesity (OB, OBS)
Human Leptin is a hormone expressed and secreted primarily by adipose tissues, though also produced by a variety of other cells at lower levels. It is a ligand for the leptin receptor (LEPR) that is expressed at highest levels in the hypothalamus. Leptin’s primary role is in the regulation of energy balance in the body, stimulating energy expenditure while inhibiting hunger. It inhibits the activity of neuropeptide Y and downregulates the expression of endocannabinoids, while upregulating expression of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Obesity is correlated with a receptor desensitization to leptin that leaves the eater hungry despite high energy stores. Leptin also plays a role in hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, ossification, inflammation, and immune responses.
