Introduction

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a hydrophilic polymer. It can be easily synthesized by anionic ring opening polymerization of ethylene oxide to obtain a series of molecular weights and various end groups. When crosslinked into a network, PEG can have high water content and form a "hydrogel". The hydrogel formation can be initiated by crosslinking PEG with ionizing radiation or by covalent crosslinking of PEG macromolecular monomers with reactive chain ends. PEG is a material suitable for biological applications because it does not trigger immune responses. PEG is used to modify therapeutic proteins and peptides to increase solubility and reduce toxicity. Photopolymerized PEG hydrogels have emerging applications in the preparation of bioactive and immune isolation barriers for cell encapsulation.
